The Opposition has welcomed the release of the School Education Act 1999 review but says the Cook Labor Government must act now after months of pressure from the Opposition, families, disability advocates and the community.
The review makes 15 recommendations across an important and broad range of issues.
“The Opposition welcomes the release of this long-awaited review, which we – together with the disability sector and the wider education community – have been urging the Education Minister to release for months,” Shadow Education Minister Liam Staltari said.
“Families, educators and advocates contributed to this review in good faith and should not have had to wait nearly a year for it to see the light of day – often having their requests for an update rebuffed.
“We will now consider the recommendations carefully – but there are clear opportunities to act immediately.”
Mr Staltari said the onus was now squarely on the Government to move quickly and give certainty to students, families and teachers by outlining clear timelines.
“Students with disability, their families and their teachers deserve confidence and support – and now is the time for real action,” Mr Staltari said.
“There can be no more delays. The Government’s Disability Reform Unit must not be used to kick meaningful reform into the long grass. It needs to be transparent, consultative and get to work immediately.
“To give the community confidence, it’s vital that the Government sets out clear timelines for delivering these reforms.
“As a start, we call for urgent investment in our school and education support centre infrastructure to boost accessibility and give students with disability the quality learning facilities they deserve.”
